Young people get a great start on the road to success with SELF (Striving for Excellence to Launch Futures). Goodwill’s premier youth development and employment initiative is designed to improve the positive outcomes of young people ages 16 – 19, who live in or receive other services in Southwest Baltimore – SOWEBO. By providing a 4–6 week Job Readiness training curriculum, held at partner locations, SELF equips participants with the tools necessary to obtain and maintain jobs that lead to careers. SELF’s Life Skills training component provides youth with opportunities to develop critical work-appropriate social skills that help them to be successful and meet employers’ expectations on the job.

Not only does Goodwill’s SELF program make a difference in the lives of Southwest Baltimore youth, but we also provide their families with connections to the resources they need to improve their quality of life, at one of our SOWEBO service locations. Family members of program participants are encouraged to enroll in SELF to access any of the numerous services Goodwill provides. In addition to referrals for Goodwill services, Case Managers also provide COMPREHENSIVE FAMILY SERVICES with referrals to needed community resources, including, but not limited to, education, mental health and housing to help facilitate the resolution of any household barriers to overall success, through partnerships with community organizations that share a common commitment to make a difference in the lives of Baltimore youth and their families.
